'Why,' demanded Ron, seizing her timetable, 'have you outlined all Lockhart's lessons in little hearts?'
Hermione snatched the timetable back, flushing furiously.
- Chapter 6

'At least no one on the Gryffindor team had to buy their way in,' said Hermione sharply. 'They got in on pure talent.'
The smug look on Malfoy's face flickered.
'No one asked your opinion, you filthy little Mudblood,' he spat.
Harry knew at once that Malfoy had said something really bad because there was an instant uproar at his words. Flint had to dive in front of Malfoy to stop Fred and George jumping on him, Alicia shrieked, 'How dare you!' and Ron plunged his hand into his robes, pulled out his wand, yelling, 'You'll pay for that one, Malfoy!' and pointed it furiously under Flint's arm at Malfoy's face.
A loud bang echoed around the stadium and a jet of green light shot out of the wrong end of Ron's wand, hitting him in the stomach and sending him reeling backwards onto the grass.
'Ron! Ron! Are you all right?' squealed Hermione.
- Chapter 7

'Hermione, let me read your composition,' said Ron desperately, checking his watch.
'No, I won't,' said Hermione, suddenly severe. 'You've had ten days to finish it.'
'I only need another two inches, go on...'
The bell rang. Ron and Hermione led the way to History of Magic, bickering.
- Chapter 9

'Have you ever seen spiders act like that?' said Hermione wonderingly.
'No,' said Harry, 'have you, Ron? Ron?'
He looked over his shoulder. Ron was standing well back, and seemed to be fighting the impulse to run.
'What's up?' said Harry.
'I - don't - like - spiders,' said Ron tensely.
'I never knew that,' said Hermione, looking at Ron in surprise. 'You've used spiders in potions loads of times...'
'I don't mind them dead,' said Ron, who was carefully looking anywhere but at the window, 'I just don't like the way they move...'
Hermione giggled.
'It's not funny,' said Ron, fiercely.
- Chapter 9

'A month?' said Ron. 'Malfoy could have attacked half the Muggle-borns in the school by then!' But Hermione's eyes narrowed dangerously again, and he added swiftly, 'But it's the best plan we've got, so full steam ahead, I say.'
- Chapter 10

Ron's jaw dropped so that Crabbe's face looked even more gormless than usual. Fortunately, Malfoy didn't notice, and Harry, thinking fast, said, 'You must have some idea who's behind it all...'
'You know I haven't, Goyle, how many times do I have to tell you?' snapped Malfoy. 'And father won't tell me anything about the last time the Chamber was opened, either. Of course, it was fifty years ago, so it was before his time, but he knows all about it, and he says that it was all kept quiet and it'll look suspicious if I know too much about it. But I know one thing: last time the Chamber of Secrets was opened, a Mudblood died. So I bet it's only a matter of time before one of them's killed this time...I hope it's Granger,' he said with relish.
Ron was clenching Crabbe's gigantic fists.
- Chapter 12

'What's that?' asked Harry, pointing to something gold sticking out from under Hermione's pillow.
'Just a Get Well card,' said Hermione hastily, trying to poke it out of sight, but Ron was too quick for her. He pulled it out, flicked it open and read aloud:
'To Miss Granger, wishing you a speedy recovery, from your concerned teacher, Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, Order of Merlin, Third Class, Honorary Member of the Dark Force Defence League and five times winner of Witch Weekly's Most-Charming-Smile Award.'
Ron looked up at Hermione, disgusted.
'You sleep with this under your pillow?'
But Hermione was spared answering by Madam Pomfrey sweeping over with her evening dose of medicine.
- Chapter 13

'He sounds like Percy,' said Ron, wrinkling his nose in disgust. 'Prefect, Head Boy - probably top of every class.'
'You say that like it's a bad thing,' said Hermione, in a slightly hurt voice.
- Chapter 13

Ron shook his head, wide-eyed. Hermione, however, clapped a hand to her forehead.
'Harry - I think I've just understood something! I've got to go to the library!'
And she sprinted away, up the stairs.
'What does she understand?' said Harry distractedly, still looking around, trying to tell where the voice had come from.
'Loads more than I do,' said Ron, shaking his head.
'But why's she got to go to the library?'
'Because that's what Hermione does,' said Ron, shrugging. 'When in doubt, go to the library.'
- Chapter 14

'I'm quite surprised the Mudbloods haven't all packed their bags by now,' Malfoy went on. 'Bet you five Galleons the next one dies. Pity it wasn't Granger...'
The bell rang at that moment, which was lucky; at Malfoy's last words, Ron had leapt off his stool, and in the scramble to collect bags and books, his attempts to reach Malfoy went unnoticed.
'Let me at him,' Ron growled, as Harry and Dean hung onto his arms. 'I don't care, I don't need my wand, I'm going to kill him with my bare hands -'
- Chapter 15

Ron read the message, swallowed hard and looked sideways at the empty seat usually filled by Hermione. The sight seemed to stiffen his resolve, and he nodded. -- Chapter 15

'Miss Weasley should go up to the hospital wing straight away,' Dumbledore interrupted in a firm voice. 'This has been a terrible ordeal for her. There will be no punishment. Older and wiser wizards than she have been hoodwinked by Lord Voldemort.' He strode over to the door and opened it. 'Bed rest and perhaps a large, steaming mug of hot chocolate. I always find that cheers me up,' he added, twinkling kindly down at her. 'You will find that Madam Pomfrey is still awake. She's just giving out Mandrake juice - I dare say the Basilisk's victims will be waking up any moment.'
'So Hermione's OK!' said Ron brightly.
